…it would be wrong to play a purely defensive role and let the enemy gather his forces unmolested. Whilst it is not the rule to attack far superior forces, there are occasions when this must be done.

From Christopher Hibbert, Arnhem

The balance of the Reconnaissance Squadron was drawn into a prolonged skirmish along the line of the railway and was clearly not going to be able to force its way to the objective. As soon as he heard that the Reconnaissance Squadron had been blocked, Lathbury sought out his battalion commanders, encouraging them to make the best speed they could to their objectives. He reached Lieutenant Colonel Fitch’s 3rd Battalion, which was already facing some difficulty and was joined soon after by General Urquhart, who, aware that the Reconnaissance Squadron’s coup de main strike had failed, had decided that he was too far away from the battle and had left his headquarters to see what he could do to hasten the advance. By this time the 3rd Battalion was under pressure from behind as well as being unable to make any progress to the front. Night was approaching and a decision was made to halt at the Hartenstein Hotel with a view to renewing the attack in the morning. Urquhart would have no further contact with his headquarters for the next day and a half.
